DIPLOMACY
The captain approached the sergeant with a bit of bad news. "Sergeant," he said, "we just got notice that Smith's grandmother died. You'd better go break the news to him."
The sergeant walked into the barracks, paused at the doorway and shouted, "Hey, Smith, your grandmother died."
The captain was horrified. "Sergeant, that's no way to tell a man that his grandmother has died, Look how you've shocked him. You have to use tact in a situation like this. I think we'd better send you to the Tact and Diplomacy School."
So the sergeant spent a year studying at Tact and Diplomacy School. On the day he returned, the captain approached him. "Well, sergeant, how did you do in school?"
"Fine," replied the sergeant. "I've really learned how to be tactful."
"That's good, because we've just gotten notice that Lopez's grandmother died. Go in and tell him."
The sergeant entered the barracks, paused at the doorway and called his men to attention. When they were lined up he stepped before them and ordered, "All those with living grandmothers step forward… not so fast, Lopez."
